There are some household jobs that a reasonably skilled person can complete on their own, and there are others that only a professional should attempt. For example, roofing and shingles installation should only be completed by a professional.

Even skilled roof repair professionals who receive safety training each year fall to their deaths while working to install roof shingles.

With that said, even though we don’t want you to “try this at home,” we would like to walk you through the process of how to install roof shingles. This article will help you understand the process of what our AmeriPro roofing installers will be doing on top of your home or business.

How to Install Roof Shingles

We will walk you through the basics of roofing shingles installation. While this guide won’t prepare you to become a professional roofer, it will help you understand the general process.

1. Prepare the roof for shingles installation.

Your AmeriPro roofers will first remove all old roofing materials, including nails and flashing (a thin metal material that directs water away from chimneys, roof valleys, and other areas).

2. Install the underlayment.

The underlayment is the water-resistant layer that goes between your asphalt shingles installation and roof bed. It looks like black paper and protects the plywood sheeting that makes up the roof of your structure.

3. Install the drip edge.

The drip edge is a special piece of flashing that is installed at the edges of the roof. The purpose of the drip edge is to keep water away from your fascia and keep water from getting underneath the layers of your roof.

4. Install the starter strip.

Your first layer of Owens Corning shingles is called your starter strip. Your AmeriPro installer will use chalk to mark the exact center of your roof and will install your starter strip in the middle of the chalk line.

5. Install shingles.

Our highly trained AmeriPro installers will continue installing shingles along the entire span of your roof, following the instructions specific for Owens Corning shingles installation. Your installers will trim the shingles to the necessary size when the edge of the row is reached.

6. Install ridge shingles and flashing.

Ridge shingles are installed at the peaks, and flashing is installed in the creases, valleys, and joints of your roof.

7. Clean up the debris.

Replacing the roof of your house can be a messy process. AmeriPro roofers will protect your landscaping and leave your property free of debris.
